Augusta, the second-largest city
in Georgia, is located on the south bank of the Savannah River midway
between the Great Smokey Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a growing
and thriving city with a metropolitan- area population of around 400,000,
and recently ranked the second most favorable place to live in Georgia. The
area is known for its balmy climate, with an annual mean temperature of 64
degrees.
Minor league sports are great for fans. The tickets are cheap, the
beer is cheap, and the fans are rowdy. Augusta is home to both a minor
league baseball team and a minor league hockey team. Don't go to these
games expecting to see spectacular plays, but definitely show up expecting
to have fun.
Augusta Lynx Ice Hockey (www.augustalynx.com)
Hockey games are the best games to watch. The arenas are small, the
fans are rowdy, and you're almost guaranteed to see a fight on the ice.
If you've never been to one, then there's no better place to start than at a
minor league game. The Augusta Lynx play their games downtown at the
Augusta Civic Center. I suggest you don't get a free ticket from work
(and get stuck up in the rafters), but pay the $13 to sit right up against
the glass and feel the thunder of the game.
Augusta Greenjackets Baseball (www.greenjackets.net)
There is nothing more relaxing than sipping a beer and watching a baseball
game on a warm afternoon. Lake Olmstead Stadium is a small, but that
just means that there isn't a bad seat in the house. You'll have a
great time no matter where you sit. You can get free tickets from
work, and sometimes there a people at the stadium handing out free tickets.
If you can't get a free one, then the tickets will cost you $5-$6.
Masters (www.masters.org/en_US/index.html)
If you have the good fortune to be in Augusta during April, you can
experience the thrill of the Master's Golf Tournament. Since it is one
of the four major professional golf tournaments, the Masters attracts the
best pro golfers in the world. Each golfer covets the "green jacket"
and dreams of adding his name to the history books. You can get
tickets at work, but you have to be both quick and lucky as supplies are
very limited.
Ice Skating
For an evening of fun, head to the Augusta Iceforum, rent some skates, and
head onto the ice.
Bowling
Everyone loves to bowl, and there are enough bowling alleys to satisfy your
tastes. Fort Gordon offers a bowling alley for military residents,
while civilians satisfy their bowling appetite at the bowling alley off of
Washington Road.
