Germany Tightens Measures Against Bird
Flu
Germany is on tight measures against bird flu
after the disease appeared in Western Europe. Federal Agriculture and
Protection of Consumer Minister Horst Seehofer is planning a series of
diligent measures.
Cats will be kept inside in every region the bird flu was detected and
it will be mandatory to keep dogs on leashes. Human entry and exits to
poultry farms will be banned.

German Cat Infected with Bird Flu
A cat that was found dead in northern Germany with the H5N1 bird flu
virus had the highly pathogenic Asian strain that can be transmitted to
humans, an institute specializing in veterinary diseases said on
Thursday.
"The discovery isn't a reason for panic or hysteria but it's a new
situation," Agriculture Minister Horst Seehofer said.
The cat is the first mammal known to have been infected with the disease
in the European Union, although the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, which
advises the government on animal diseases, said the discovery was
neither a surprise nor a reason to take additional precautions.
The island of Ruegen, off Germany's Baltic coast, where the cat was
found dead last weekend, has seen the largest concentration of bird flu
cases in Germany, with 115 cases.
Another 11 cases have been found in the coastal region of Mecklenburg
Vorpommern and 14 others have been found in the states of Schleswig
Holstein and Brandenburg in northern Germany and Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg
in the south, the Agriculture Ministry said.
Experts believe the cat probably contracted the disease by eating
infected birds.
The World Health Organization has said the spreading of the virus to a
cat probably does not increase the risk to humans of a disease which has
killed at least 94 people since late 2003.
But some experts have said cat-to-human transmission cannot be ruled
out. --courtesy Reuters
German Cat Infected with Deadliest Form
of Bird Flu
BERLIN : A dead cat found on the German island of Ruegen this week was
infected with the highly pathogenic form of H5N1 bird flu that can be
fatal to humans, the national veterinary laboratory said.
The Friedrich Loeffler Institute said the cat had exactly the same,
highly contagious strain of the virus detected in wild swans found on
the Baltic Sea island, the epicentre of Germany's bird flu outbreak.
It said this was the first case of its kind in the European Union.
The laboratory referred to the type of H5N1 found in the cat as the
"Asian" strain of the virus that has claimed 93 human lives since 2003.
It also killed domestic cats, tigers and a panther in Asia in 2004,
leading German scientists to remark that they were not surprised a
feline here had succumbed to the disease.
The cat was found near a docked ferry on Ruegen, the same spot where
infected wild swans were found in mid-February, signalling the start of
the outbreak in Germany.
The case has prompted the German authorities to order pet owners in bird
flu-hit regions from the Baltic to the southern border with Switzerland
to keep cats indoors and dogs on leashes.
It has also heightened fears of a long-running epidemic in Germany that
could infect poultry and humans.
German media reported on Thursday that Agriculture Minister Horst
Seehofer was considering restricting access to the country's poultry
farms, which have so far been spared the virus.
